SUSTAINABILITY NORTH EAST & THE LOW HEDGELEY RESTORATION SITE

North East Group’s subsidiary, ‘North East Concrete,’ has for many years spearheaded an exemplary sustainability initiative, which aims to harmonise industry with the natural world. Their approach has breathed new life into ecosystems, fostering the flourishing of wildlife and vibrant wild flowering plants which is a testament to their commitment to ecological restoration.

One remarkable case in point is the transformation of: ‘Low Hedgeley Quarry’, a shining example of sustainability North East in action. Here, the creation of mudflats along the lake’s edges has catalysed a remarkable resurgence of wading birds. Regular bird surveys have confirmed this transformation, revealing an influx of avian species drawn to this revitalised habitat.

Moreover, what distinguishes this endeavour is the preservation of all existing trees during the quarrying process. These ancient sentinels, some exceeding a century in age, have been left untouched, thus ensuring their continued integral role within our country’s delicate ecosystem.

Adding to the success story is the thriving bird population, which includes majestic swans gracing the lakeside.

Shaun Carey, representing North East Group, underscores their unwavering commitment: ‘We approach restoration and post-project care with the utmost seriousness. We recognize our collective responsibility to safeguard any displaced wildlife and are immensely proud of our capacity to replenish the natural world with what we extract from it’.
